In the Apollo 11 mission, it was world-known that Armstrong was the first to set foot on the moon, but not many knew that Armstrong was not wearing the Omega Moonwatch. It was Aldrin wore the Omega Moonwatch on the moon’s surface. Later reports and interviews says that Armstrong left his Omega Moonwatch on the spacecraft as a backup clock, in-case of system failure on-board. Therefore, Aldrin was the only one with The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch on his wrist during their 2 1/2 hours moonwalk.
The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch defeated 13 other competitors, before NASA choose their official Moonwatch. Some of the other wristwatches includes Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, Longinees Wittnauer, and a Houston Jeweler. The Omega Moonwatch went through several extreme tests and was chosen for its toughness and good timekeeping abilities. Since the start of the Apollo program, NASA put these watches through extreme tests. The purpose is simple – to find a watch that could resist the extreme environment of the outer-space. Some tests includes extreme temperature test (from -160 to 120 degree Celsius), vibrations of space flight, and also to serve as a backup for the astronauts for calculating speed, thrusters’ burn, and finally distance.
The Omega Moonwatch further proofs its worth during the Apollo 13 mission when a command module had an on-board explosion that caused power lost. For three long days, the crew can only drift around the moon and thei Omega Moonwatch was the only functioning device on-board.
