IWC Big Pilot IW5004-01 is a discontinued model with a last known retail of $14,0000. Its successor, the IW5009-01, currently retails for $15,400. This was a military issue watch use by Aviators. The big pilot watch case is also known as “Nav B-Uhr” or “Beobachtungsuhr” (Navigation Watch).
Big Pilot IW5004-01 Dial and Case
The case of modern Big Pilot by IWC is 46.2mm in diameter, comprised of both polish and brush finished stainless steel. The case contains an inner core of soft-iron for anti-magnetic protection like the Rolex Milgauss. A big screw down crown would date back to its wartime origins when adjustments were done while the wearer wore gloves. The text on the onion shaped crown contains the word “Probus Scafusia” – which means good, solid craftsmanship from Schaffhausen. This screw-down crown ensures water resistant of up to 60 meters (200 feet).
The traditional black dial has the triangular index at 12 o’clock with two dots. Likewise, this mostly Arabic number hour markers style were typically used in 1940. Other features on the Big Pilot IW5004-01 is a date aperture at the 6 o’clock position as well as a power reserve indicator Sub-Dial at the 3 o’clock position.

The Big Pilot of today incorporates a rotor which provides automatic winding of the mainspring; whereas the original Groβe Fliegeruhr was a manually wound watch. IWC IW5004-01 Caliber 51110 is an automatic movement with 44 jewels. It also has an impressive 7 days power reserve when fully wound.
