IWC Schaffhausen has always a clear focus on technology and development, and this year at SIHH 2017 is no different. The name IWC Da Vinci Tourbillion Retrograde Chronograph is a watch where Chronograph meets Tourbillon. It reflects its special feature where it has a combination of a chronograph, a classic tourbillion, and a retrograde date – all on a single dial. To allow all these, a new in-house 89900 calibre is developed to create this distinctive constellation.

The tourbillon cage is bearing mounted at the 6 o’clock position, on the underside, and is not connected to an upper bridge. The tourbillon also showcases a technically composite hack function that ensures dow-to-the-second accuracy when setting the watch. This technique is known as the “hacking tourbillon”, a newly designed system of levers. To make up for the increased energy used by this new tourbillon, the pallet and escape wheel are made of diamond-coated silicon to reduce friction; an extremely tough surface with good gliding properties, allowing it to keep the Orginal 68-hour power reserve when fully wound.
The Chronograph function at 12 o’clock allows stopped times of up to 11 hours and 59mins. The central seconds hand measures stopped times to an accuracy of one-quarter of a second.
IWC Retrograde for a more evocative sense of time
Apart from the Chronograph and the tourbillon complication, the third complication is the retrograde date display. It can be found at the left-hand side of the dial showing the date from 1st to the 31st of the month. For months with lesser than 31 days or when the watch has not been used for a while, the date display can be forwarded rapidly and easily using the crown. This concept allows the date hand to move across an arc and then, at the end of the scale, return to the starting point; giving a much more fascinating way of displaying date as compared with a traditional date window.

The Da Vinci Tourbillon Retrograde Chronograph’s precious red gold case with golden push-buttons and lugs has a thoughtfully balanced look. The well balanced arrangement of the three complications on a silver-plated dial give the watch a harmonious look. The IWC watch, which is water-resistant to 3 bar, has a transparent sapphire-glass back. Looking through it, we see the new IWC-manufactured 89900 calibre with its solid red gold rotor. The watch is 44 millimetres in diameter and 17 millimetres tall. Price of IWC Da Vinci Tourbillion Retrograde Chronograph is around USD$109,000.
