This year at SIHH 2017, Panerai demonstrates the capability of Laboratorio Di Idee to innovate. The new creation of Panerai Lab-ID Luminor 1950 Carbotech (PAM700) has a case with extraordinary characteristics; thanks to the brilliant development of carbon, the potential is infinite. LAB-ID PAM700 is a complete new deep black dial and a movement that requires no lubrication. If you think this is awesome, wait till you know that the Lab-ID Carbotech comes with a 50-Years Guarantee.
This new Special Edition is only limited to 50 units and comes in the classic design of Luminor 1950 collection. While the design stays true to Panerai’s collection, the watch also comes with a series of technological innovations. Panerai draws inspiration from its own past and combines them with high technology watchmaking.
Every component of the new Panerai Lab-ID denotes the ability of this chemical element to create materials with phenomenal properties. Admire the PAM700 in the video below.
The LAB-ID Luminor 1950 Carbotech Case: Exceptional performance and every characteristic unique
The PAM700 Lab-ID case is 49mm in diameter, and its’ Carbotech is a composite material base on carbon fiber. Carbotech is dense and has uneven blackness which varies with the cut of the material. It is because of the variation of blackness that makes each example unique, just like our fingerprint. In addition, Carbotech is light in weight, hypo-allergenic and not subject to corrosion, as well as having exceptional mechanical properties.
To form the sheets of Carbotech from which these components are made, very thin sheets of carbon fiber are pressed together. These are done at a controlled temperature under very high pressure with organic polymer PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone), which links the composite material. To achieve great visual conformity, the carbon fibers used are very long. With these, the mechanical properties are further enhanced compared to other high-quality watchmaking materials; such as titanium or ceramics.
The Technology of Carbon Nanotubes for a Deep Black Dial
The dial has the historic sandwich structure invented by Panerai themselves, and have always been unmatched for their legibility. The new Panerai LAB-ID PAM700 creates a new blend of design, construction and materials technology this SIHH 2017. The Luminous substance used in this case is blue-coloured Super-LumiNova – emerges through the openings made in the dial. As can be seen in the image, all the indicators, hours markers and the small second dial are done with this Super-LumiNova – greatly enhancing the visibility and legibility at night.
The optical properties of this unique coating have been made specifically to absorb light; reducing reflection to a minimum and giving the dial an unusually deep black appearance. Because it is not possible to print these characteristics on a dial, all figures are done directly on the crystal dial.
Panerai LAB-ID PAM700 New P.3001/C Movement, running perfectly without Lubrication
Panerai Lab-Id Carbotech P.3001/c is a hand-wound caliber with a power reserve of 3 days, now featured with semi-skeletonised. The new P.3001/c caliber has only four jewels and no external lubrication is needed. In addition, the watch is Guaranteed for 50 years. How this is done is by using a wide range of infusion: like individual parts of the movement and associated with the special properties of carbon, the plates, bridges, barrels, escapement and anti-shock device use self-lubricating and dry lubricating materials. Hence, exempt from any liquid lubrication.
Other things you should know about the New Panerai Lab-ID P.3001/c:
- Spring Barrels: The two SPRING BARRELS have a multi-layer coating, the uppermost one being DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon).
- Bridges and Plate: The BRIDGES and PLATE are made from a composite material integrating a Tantalum-based ceramic.
- Escapement: The main components of the ESCAPEMENT are made of silicon and the wheelwork has a special DLC coating.
- Anti-Shock Device: A surface coating of DLC on the jewels means that the Incabloc® ANTI-SHOCK DEVICE needs no further lubrication.
The new PANERAI LAB-IDTM (PAM00700) is supplied with a black leather strap, with contrasting sewing in the same blue as the luminous details of the dial. The 50 pieces Limited edition Panerai Lab-Id Luminor Carbotech cost around USD$53,470 (at the time of publishing).
One thing for sure – Your life will never be the same again once you have owned your first Officine Panerai watch.
