Panerai Radiomir Black Seal 3 Days PAM 388 is the upgraded version of PAM 183 Radiomir Black Seal. Panerai PAM 183 is long known as one of Radiomir best entry level Panerai. If you are thinking of Luminor or Radiomir, then you might consider PAM 000 or PAM 112 instead. For some Paneristi and Panerai collectors, the ETA movements and Unitas movements have been a love-hate relationship. But one of the major breakthrough would be the fully in-house P.9000 movement, housed inside a Radiomir – Panerai Radiomir Black Seal 3 Days Automatic PAM 388. You can hear a raucous cry of celebration from Paneristi.
In the 1930s, Panerai was the official watch of the Royal Italian Navy during the world war 2. Their missions were carried out using human torpedoes, also known as “Black Seals”. The Radiomir was the true vintage style that remained untouched till today. With such long heritage, the upgrade of Radiomir Black Seal Panerai PAM 183 to Panerai Radiomir Black Seal 3 Days PAM 388 seems like a risky one.

Panerai went ahead with the upgrade anyway, and in SIHH 2012, Officine Panerai decided to launch the Black Seal 3 Days PAM 388. At first glance, the upgrade from the PAM 183 to PAM 388 you can notice the date window at the 3 o’çlock position.

The case is 45mm diameter with a cushion-shaped stainless steel and with detachable wire lugs. The PAM 388 keeps the historical looks of the PAM 183 (except for the additional date window), and a 3 days power reserve automatic movement. The black dial face matches the black alligator strap together with a beige colour contrasting stitch. The second hand is right beside the 9 o’clock position, and the date window at 3 o’clock and a signature “Radiomir Black Seal” at the 12 o’clock position. One additional update from the PAM 183 is that PAM 388 hands are made of polished stainless steel instead of black. Panerai PAM 388 retains the water resistant of 100 meters.
Panerai’s in-house automatic P.9000 Calibre
The heart beating inside this watch is P.9000, an in-house movement. It is a pride to Paneristi as we can say that the Panerai timepiece is 100% in-house made. At 7.9mm thick, beating at a frequency of 28,800 vph, the P.9000 movement has 197 parts, 28 jewels, Glucydur balance, and two barrels that give a power reserve of 3 days.
The movement was first built for Luminors, which requires a little less convex sapphire crystal in a special made case. Radiomir Black Seal 3 Days PAM 388 is special being the first Radiomir to house this P.9000 movement.
One thing for sure – Your life will never be the same again once you have owned your first Officine Panerai watch.
