Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 16520 – The Rolex Daytona Review

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona watch Ref. 116520 enjoys its frame as a racer’s watch not many can claim in the world. Through the Rolex Daytona History, there are various models of Rolex Daytona Cosmograph, but it’s stainless steel models (both black dial and white dial models) are prized by Rolex collectors. Rolex  produce a limited number of Rolex Cosmograph Daytona steel model each year. So it wasn’t a surprise that demand for the Rolex Daytona 16520 is way higher than supply. The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona became so popular in the sport of auto racing that it acquired its nickname “Daytona” in the late 1960s, after the Daytona International Speedway. Rolex Paul Newman Daytona was also a gem of the Daytonas. Today, Rolex is still a very supportive sponsor of auto racing.

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 16520 – The Rolex Daytona Review

This Rolex Daytona Review covers both versions of 16520 – the white and black dial. Naturally some would question which is more popular, but Rolex does not announce production numbers, so there is no definite answer for this. However, I personally prefer the black dial version over the white. The choice was easy as I find the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona black dial stands out more, and it gives a slightly sportier look.

Rolex Daytona Review on – The Function

Rolex is known to design watches with specific functionality for each series (like Rolex Gmt 2 for it’s Dual-time functionality); and it is no difference for the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 16520. Rolex Daytona Cosmograph has a chronograph function on the dial and the graduated tachymeter bezel. This gives it the ability to calculate and measure elapsed time and the average speed. Given the use of Rolex Daytona Cosmograph in sports event, it is designed to weather the roughness that comes with sports.

Rolex Daytona Cosmograph – The Dial

The Triplock crown together with the 40mm Oyster case provides the Daytona watch a remarkable 100m water resistance. The dial is simply remarkable as well. The dial is covered with sapphire crystal with black / white dial, with white gold hands and markets, makes it easy to read time. The legibility at night is well thought with superluminova painted markers and hands to provide better visibility.

Rolex Daytona 16520 – Bracelet

Like the Rolex Oyster series, Rolex Daytona 16520 has interesting bracelet. If you are familiar with Oyster style bracelet with flip-lock safety clasp, then the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona has two major upgrades from it. Firstly, the centre links of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona are entirely solid (not as hallow as other models like The Rolex Submariner). The Rolex Daytona and the Rolex Yachtmaster are the first with this redesigned bracelet. Next, is an newly upgraded clasp that is of a higher quality polished steel. It is definitely looking better (and feels better too) than the thinly stamped steel construction of the classic bracelet.

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona – The 4130 Movement

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 4130 movement replaced the 4030 in 2000. Unlike the 4030 (which was actually a modified movement of Zenith Caliber 400 El Primero), 4130 is an in-house movement from Rolex. Similar to most quality chronograph movements, the calibre 4130 works on a column wheel design to employ and  control the Cosmograph function. A vertical friction coupling is used by Rolex to engage the column wheel function innovatively. This allows the chronograph seconds hand to start smoothly, which ultimately means a more accurate timekeeping.

Apart from more accuracy, Daytona 16520 has also a higher power reserve of 72 hours. With a total part counts of 201 components and 44 jewel movement, it oscillates at 28,800 bph. As compared with other manufacturers, these numbers are less that many modern chronograph movement. Ceramic ball bearings are also used for the first time in Rolex watches. Unlike Rolex’s usual single sleeve bearing, ceramic ball bearing means better rotor spin with better efficiency and lower maintenance. Of cause, with such movements, each of Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 4130 calibre has to first achieve COSC certification.
