Rolex DateJust Review takes an in-depth look on the 16200 family of the DateJust 36mm. The Rolex DateJust just one of the authentic watches, and you can find many models of DateJust (DJ) in the Vintage Rolex Market. Although when you ask most Rolex watch fans about vintage Rolex or authentic watches, chances are they may tell you about rare vintage Rolex Daytonas or the Submariners and even the new bi-color Cerachrome bezels on the GMT watches. Few Rolex enthusiasts will tell you straight about the DateJust watch.
Indeed Rolex DateJust is one of the most understated Rolex watches. It was the first waterproof certified chronometer that is automatic (self-winding), and also a wristwatch to display the date through a window on the dial. Although these features are common today, they are a game changer in the 1940s.
Rolex DateJust Review – Ref 16200 DateJust 36mm
Rolex DateJust (inspired by Rolex Bubbleback) was first introduced in 1945 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Rolex. It was released together with a jubilee celebration, and thus, the jubilee band (a 5-piece metal link bracelet) name was with it since day one.
The Datejust is one of the earliest Rolex models that survives till today. Even before Rollex tool and sport watch such as Rolex GMT and Rolex Submariner which boom in the mid-1950’s. Even though the Rolex DateJust did not have tool-like functions such as a rotating bezel or a chronograph, the innovation breakthroughs such as automatic date mechanism (the date changes once past midnight automatically) performed without delay. This is the reason for the name “just” in the DateJust, which means the date advanced – Just-in-time.
Rolex DateJust Review – On the functionality
Simple functionality such as the date window was strategically placed at the 3 O’clock position so that it could be read easily from under a shirt sleeve. Apart from this, The Rolex DateJust also has a sweeping central second-hand, different from the common subsidiary second hand at that time. Combined with the date window, this made the DateJust easier to read, finding the date without the use of a wall calendar.
The Rolex DateJust of cause housed an Oyster case, a waterproof wristwatch case by Rollex since 1926. Some other previous innovations of Rolex DateJust Review are the perpetual winding mechanism system and the sealed winding crown.
Rolex DateJust 16200 Review – on the 36mm Dial
Up till today, Rolex DateJust retains the original 36mm and the same design on the variety of dials and details. In 2009, Rolex also introduced the DateJust II in an updated 41mm size, which has a chronometer certified caliber 3136 movement. Unlike the past, todays’ Djs have many options of combinations of bracelets, dials, metals etc to choose from.
Some may think that Rolex DateJust 16200 36mm dial is too small, but it does give the watch a more vintage-looking size. As one of the authentic watches and Rolex vintage model, the Classic champagne color with simple stick marker and hands are used. Both hour markers and hands are luminous. The subtle surface on the dial is almost similar to the sunburst found on the 1960s DateJusts. The date window is upgraded to a cyclops crystal which magnifies the date at 3 o’clock. In all, this simple looking dial takes over 60 individual procedures to be created.
Rolex DateJust 16200 Review – on the Bracelet
Sure, the DateJust Jubilee bracelet is obviously the most vintage option, but we prefer the Oyster bracelet instead. Apart from the more sporty look that Oyster bracelet gives, it gives us more flexibility to work in almost any setting. It is know as some of the best bracelets today. Unlike the classic thin-but-charming folded links you can find on Vintage Rolex, the Oyster bracelet links are solid and hulking. The Oysterclasp is also an incredible piece of engineering which allows micro-adjusting the bracelet for that perfect fit to the wrist.
Rolex DateJust 16200 Review – on the Movement
The DateJust is using 3135 Automatic/ self-winding movement and is of ultramodern standards. It has been the heart of Rollex’s armory since 1988. This COSC Certified Chronometer automatic movement has 31 jewels and a blue Parachrom hairspring in it. Parachrom hairspring is an in-house innovation by Rolex and is known to be more shock and magnetic resistant. The 3135 movement has a power reserve of up to 50 hours.
